No Criminal record for Bulgarian Citizenship

Last Updated on October 4, 2024 by Bulgarian Citizenship Team

One crucial element of the Bulgarian citizenship process is the submission of a clean criminal record. Applying for a D visa lets you provide a clean criminal record from your home country or country of residency. However, the Bulgarian citizenship application requires a clean record specifically from your home country. Additionally, if you reside in another country, you must also provide a clean record from there.

Legalization of Clean Criminal Records:

You must prepare no criminal records according to the legal format. If your home country is part of the Hague Convention on Apostilles, you must apostille your documents. This applies to countries like China, the USA, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. For countries like Russia, Ukraine, and Kuwait, which have agreements with Bulgaria, you do not need further legalization. Please contact us for guidance on the legalization requirements.

Validity of the Clean Criminal Record:

In the absence of a specified validity date on the no criminal record, authorities will consider it valid for 6 months. Some countries issue no criminal records with a specific validity period; for instance, no criminal records issued by Algeria are valid for only 3 months.

Special Requirements for Police Certificates:

For US citizens, it is mandatory to submit an FBI record. Home state records are not accepted for the Bulgarian citizenship process.

For UK citizens, ACRO records are the required documentation. DBS records are not considered sufficient for this purpose.

Additional prerequisites for acquiring Bulgarian citizenship encompass:

  1. Medical Examinations for Bulgarian Citizenship
  2. Bulgarian Language Proficiency Exam for Bulgarian Citizenship
  3. Bulgaria-issued No Criminal Record Certificate
